Autumn Leaves in River 8in x 8in Mixed Media On Cradle Board
Patricia L. Smith
Patti’s academic art training began at the Okanagan College, then the University of British Columbia to earn a Bachelor of Education with a double major in visual arts 1987. Patti is well versed in many 2D and 3D media. Her two dimensional work has been successfully juried, won awards, and can be found in public and private collections in Germany, Japan, and United States as well as in western Canada. Her community murals include 56’ long “Ode to Miro” and 12’ “Landscape with Wild Roses”.
In her process, subject matter, media and approach may differ depending on the series. Whether rendered in high realism or abstraction, watercolour or collage, the common thread through the resulting images is light and shadow play, sparkle and shine, close views and reflections. She is never far from water and avoids rooms without windows.
A lifelong learner, Patti continues to seek master painters for workshops. “I love connecting with like-minded people, whether I am leading, following or collaborating. It is magic. We can all be investigating the same subject matter, concept or issue in the same medium, with the same parameters, yet we each respond in our own unique visual voice. As artists, we often spend too much time isolated in our studios. Even a fire required a spark.”
Patti is currently working through a fascination with big skies and moody clouds, rendering finished studies in charcoal and larger canvases in oil. She loves exploring with her 19’ caravan plein air painting like Emily Carr – without the monkey.
