Bridges at Night 24in x 18in Woodcut And Watercolour On Paper
Carol McQuaid, AFCA
Carol McQuaid loves the contemplation involved in capturing a scene. Honing her ability to document space with an early career in interior design and architectural rendering, her style is now looser and immediate. She works primarily on location, carrying her watercolour sketchbook journals on her travels around her native Vancouver and on her frequent adventures abroad. She is a huge proponent of sketching as a way to wake up and really see the world around us. Urban elements such as signage and iconic structures appear frequently in her work, which she then translates to larger scale paintings and relief prints, some over 8' long!
Carol prints, paints and teaches out of her Vancouver studio. She gives classes, demos and workshops both locally and internationally, and teaches art on cruise ships around the globe. Carol received her design and architectural rendering training at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, graduating in ’93, and has furthered her studies with several painting and printmaking workshops throughout the Pacific Northwest.
She has been awarded several artist residencies, most recently in Italy, Mexico and Spain. She is a Signature member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, and her linocut with watercolour piece 'Rooftops of Montmartre' won First Place in their 2015 Landscape Exhibition. “I love the drama of relief printmaking; the physical act of carving the plates and pulling the prints. I was torn between this and using watercolour to convey a sense of atmosphere, until it occurred to me to combine them both in a single piece!"
