Hotel Balmoral 40in x 30in Acrylic On Canvas
Joanne Sawatzky grew up in Vancouver and graduated from UBC with a Special Education Teaching Degree. Art was always a great way to help her students express themselves and whenever possible she incorporated art into her program. Now retired after teaching for 30 years, Joanne sees art as her new avenue for growth and discovery. Currently Joanne resides in Kitsilano, Vancouver.
As an artist, Joanne likes to record her reflections of Vancouver. "I am from Vancouver and really love this place. I make an effort to paint the pieces of Vancouver that have meaning to me." Joanne believes there is a great amount of beauty and history in the "old" Vancouver and she makes an effort to share this view with others. Joanne explores Vancouver with her camera and uses these images to create a composition that has meaning to her.
Local artist, friend and mentor Ken West has had a huge influence on Joanne's art journey. Joanne has also taken coursework at Emily Carr.
Joanne's style is described as realism and her medium is acrylic on canvas. She was successfully juried into the Federation of Canadian Artist's 2015 Icon exhibition, where her piece False Creek Ferry won an Honourable Mention, as well as their 2016 AIRS exhibition and happily this current exhibition: Crossing Boundaries 2017.
